Wellington's bars will reopen for the first time under alert level 2 on Thursday, and owners are praying for punters to come out in their droves.

Hospitality New Zealand Wellington branch president Matt McLaughlin is fearing for the future of the capital's bars.

"Courtenay Place which, to me, is New Zealand's premier entertainment precinct could be wiped off the face of the Earth in two months, which is really concerning."

There will be strict rules in place, with bar patrons seated, separated by a metre, and served by a single person.
