Kia Ora koutou,

Introducing Māori Language Classes for Beginners!

- Are you a kiwi who didn’t learn any Māori at school?
- Would you like to know a little more about Māori culture?
- Are you new to New Zealand and would like to learn a little Māori language?
- Do you need to introduce yourself in Māori sometimes?
- Are you simply curious about Māori language?
- Was your new year’s resolution to try something new?
- Do you want to know what your kids are singing about?

HERE IS THE SOLUTION…
BEGINNERS MĀORI CLASSES FOR ADULTS!

THE TEACHERS:
The fabulous Sarah Macintosh and her equally amazing daughter Jess Tawhiri will be teaching adult beginner Māori classes at the mighty Miramar North School! Jess attended the Māori immersion school Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngā Mokopuna in Seatoun, before going on to do Māori, History and Media studies at Victoria University. Sarah Macintosh is the head of the junior school at Miramar North and has been teaching for 19 years.

THE DETAILS:
The first introductory class is for 6 weeks.
Monday nights – March 9 – April 20 (missing April 9 for Easter)
Cost is $120
Location: Miramar North School, 23 Weka St, Miramar
Time: 7.30-8.30p.m

All welcome! But class numbers are very limited, so it's first in first served!

THE BASIC IDEAS:
The 6-week course aims to cover
- Greetings
- Mihi/Pepeha
- Simple conversations
- Numbers/time
- Emotions
- Place names
- Pronunciation
- Tikanga
- Everyday use of Māori
- Kiwaha - idioms.
- Whakatauki - proverbs
- Karakia
- Colours
- Months/days of the week

By the end of the course, you’ll HOPEFULLY be able to:
• Have a basic understanding of some Māori concepts and our important connections to them
• Identify the sounds of Māori letters and pronounce letter combinations using correct intonation and stress patterns
• Confidently greet people, introduce yourself and communicate basic personal information in an informal context
• Identify and respond to phrases in the classroom including basic commands/instructions
• Confidently describe the day/date, time, and the weather
• Talk in a secret language in front of your kids regarding dessert

TO REGISTER:
To register, please email Sarah at: sezmac77@gmail.com and tell us what your level of Teo Reo is, and what you hope to get from the class. We will aim to tailor the class to fit people’s needs.
