"Kia ora – Kapil Mathew from New World Te Puke here. Keen to discover a new top drop in time for summer?

My favourite wine from this year’s New World Wine Awards is Music Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It’s a new one that I discovered thanks to their place on this year’s Top 50 list, and one I highly recommend others to try for themselves. I enjoy it because it has beautiful fresh aromas of pineapple and guava with a nice crisp finish of citrus and melon. I would pair this wine with spicy, grilled and seafood dishes - pop in and grab a bottle next time seafood is on the menu in your house.”

Come into your local New World and explore the Top 50 Gold-medal winning wines – we have winners for every budget. Plus join us for complimentary wine sampling and try before you buy.

What is hemp?

Hemp is grown for the production of many products ranging from clothing and makeup to paper and cereal. In short, hemp is a raw material, much like cotton or wood. The seeds are ground for their oil and the seed cake that remains after this process is used in pet food and body care products, and now can be used in human food.

How is it different to marijuana?

Much of the confusion around hemp is from the fact that marijuana and hemp are both plants in the same genus or category called “cannabis.” Within this genus are three species and many sub-types, often called strains or cultivars. Hemp commonly means a cannabis cultivar that produces little to no THC, the primary psychoactive compound found in marijuana.

Is it legal?

The sale of hemp seed oil as food has been legal in New Zealand since 2002. Hemp seed oil was the only hemp-derived product that could be legally sold as a food or added to a food in New Zealand until November 2018 when the law changed. The legislation now allows the sale of hemp seeds as a food. Many products are now available in the form of whole seeds, hulled seeds, protein powders and flour.

What is hemp oil?

Hemp seed oil is processed from the seeds harvested from the cannabis sativa plant. Hemp seed oil is made by pressing hemp seeds, similar to how olive oil is made by pressing whole olives. Like the hemp plant, the seeds contain no THC.

Why take it?

Hemp seed oil has a balance of omega 3 and 6 in a 1:3 ratio. It also contains smaller amounts of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and oleic acid, making it a very unique essential fatty acid product. Studies have shown that GLA is useful for supporting hormonal balance.

As an essential fatty acid, hemp seed oil supports tissue building and other specialised functions. Essential fatty acids are necessary for maintaining flexible and healthy skin cell membranes and supporting the repair of damaged cells due to some skin conditions.

Other benefits of taking hemp seed oil are cardiovascular support, and support for normal hormone balance.

Lighthouse 100% Pure Hemp Seed Oil 1100 is 100 percent New Zealand grown, processed and manufactured using a cold-pressed method to maximise the purity of the omega fatty acid content. The manufacturing process ensures prolonged freshness, without any loss of the oil’s nutritional value. Hemp seed oil can be used as part of a nutritional programme to maintain and improve good health.
