The Resene Upcycling Awards are coming back this month, the third year in a row! Watch this space and get prepared for the announcement; there are great prizes up for grabs.

Upcycling is the term used for taking a preloved item and transforming it - whether it's for a new purpose altogether, or just to give it an ‘extreme makeover'. Consider using the school holidays to get Upcycling with the smaller members of your household - or use the next rainy day to drag out the paint and your creativity!

In the meantime, check out some of the creative cookies from last year.

Monetary donations to political parties are subject to rules. Depending who you are and where you come from they range from $50 to $30000. Most of that money would likely be used for advertising and like we see in USA wealthy politicians have advantages! I find it strange that a major radio and TV outlet in New Zealand is totally owned by an American company (see Wikipedia) with unrestricted freedom. Both TV3 and so called Radio Magic broadcast an incessant tirade of abuse denigrating our Prime Minister and government. They are primarily a political platform, American owned, and with mischievous support for a National government. It makes a mockery of any rules regarding donations. Such support would be worth millions if it had to be paid for by any political party. I will resist comment on the quality of the dialogue used on air. The value of daily repetition cleverly inflicted on a gullible public, and with 96% coverage, should however not be under estimated. Funny old world!

The Political Football

David from Glen Eden

We're in a good place just now, but can it last? Covid-19 is rampant worldwide. We have made mistakes and New Zealanders from infected countries are flooding in, many at our cost. Some even refuse testing. Is that lunacy or is that lunacy?
Does anyone have an answer. NO. Not even Mr Muller. The opposition is using covid-19 as a political football. They don't have any really better answers, only criticism. Mr Muller says we can't continue to keep people out, we'll be on our knees. But he has also criticised government for letting people in. I must say. with present repatriation from badly infected countries we will be lucky to escape another wave. When / if that happens you'll have something to complain about.
There are selfish people around, even mischievous, everyone needs to be aware. At this point in time NZ is in receipt of word wide acclaim. Is it too much to ask that ALL political parties contribute to our continued success rather than just try to win an election with hind sight criticism. It won't work, we are not all stupid.

This issue is packed with good reads and amazing offers from our friends and partners. We take a close look at urban farmer Freeman Farms, and visit an Auckland coastal garden that the owner waited three long decades to create as well as a Dunedin garden where they’ve grown flowers for nearly 50 years. We're still on the hunt for our Houseplant Hero, thanks to our friends at Yates and Kings Plant Barn. Nominations are now open for our 2020 Ryman Healthcare Gardener of the Year too! There’s a feature on walnut growers in NZ, highlights of new roses coming out this year and of course, details on how to get yourself $20 worth of free bulbs from NZ Bulbs.
