“If I hear music, I just want to dance – body seems to just move!” says dancer Audrey, 84. Poet Brian, 86, says “Poetry helps me to question and understand the meaning of life”, followed by a witty “– haven’t worked out what it means yet”.

As their residents blaze their own trails, Ryman matches that pioneering spirit. “Ryman villages offer living choices to suit everyone so that you can live the way you want.

Requesting support from Neighbourhood Watch

We have a resident who has disturbed the peace and been drunk, abusive and disorderly in the weekend. He was abusive to me as well. The managers were contacted and they sent him back to his room. However the resident has sort support for his grievance from another resident and last night she was drunk and they were both discussing his issues about residents that he has had differences with, she decided to take his side and was stalking me and another resident outside our rooms last night. I informed the Managers and one of them advised that I should be safe if I'm locked in room and if there is any trouble for me to call the police. This was between 10pm and 11.30pm. Finally one of the other manager's came to the ground floor to restore order and tenants were returned to their respective rooms. I have lodged a Police report and the managers have told me that they can give notice, but are restricted with regards evictions, so they can only evict residence immediately if harm is actually done to another resident and maybe the property. So our safety is not fully protected at anytime in this residence, especially at night. So I'm keen to make contact with the neighbourhood watch support group, to bring this to their attention and other residence in the area, in case I have to call the police and they arrive in mass. I have been fortunate to speak with another resident who has been at Maidstone lodge for many years and knows this tenant has been troublesome. So I'm now locked in my room for the rest of the night, so that I don't bang into either of the resident's mentioned. Maidstone Lodge as I have been informed by the Managers is a lodge so they can't enforce tenants to keep a particular standard of behaviour, but for us to just be careful of our own safety and to call the police if we are ever threatened and to remain locked in our rooms. The only problem though is that the front door and only entry and exit to the premises is locked and a swap card is required to gain entry. Fortunately I'm on the ground floor. This ground zero. Thank you in advance if you have any information about the neighbourhood watch support group.

Gone are the days of getting one qualification out of school to see you through your working life. Now, upskilling, online courses and on-the-job training are all part of making your way up the career ladder.

We want to talk to people who have completed micro-credentials, bitesize qualifications for specific skills.

Perhaps you've pieced together a full qualification by doing online courses, or maybe you've taken a workshop rather than investing in a six-month course. We'd love to hear from you - email josephine.franks@stuff.co.nz
