Covid-19 has no racial preference. It has all of us, worldwide, by the throat. Our economic struggles are also shared. Tourism support and airlines are going to suffer most until a vaccine is effective.
All ready efforts to help the economy are being made by selective admission of America Cup people, and others.
There is no doubt such admission will help but risk of bringing in infection must be managed. The present claim of elimination should not elicit complacency.
Testing and tracing needs everyone's cooperation and is our best defence. Any backtrack into levels 2 to 4 doesn't bear thinking about.
Many countries are still seeing covid-19 climbing out of control. NZ is especially fortunate with geography, excellent management and compliance coming together to reach level one. Now the government is doing all it can to assist economic recovery. Perhaps there is undue hype about the public debt. It may be recalled that when National took the reigns for nine years our public debt climbed from about 25 billion to over 90 billion dollars. Borrowing, printing money, is nothing new! NZ is borrowing out of need in these unprecedented times but still far less than many countries. Labour inherited run down public services and have left it late to try and restore them. I will be very interested to hear more detail about the attractive promises made by Mr Muller. His claims of past National performance including "advice" from John Key is a worry. Advice from he who underfunded public services, even adding 60 billion to public debt, wasting 28 million trying to change a flag, and saying "there is no housing shortage" does not convince me of miracles to come. "Rockstar" economy claim was a cruel joke.
What can Mr Muller do that is different or better than what is all ready being done? Please tell me and I might well vote National again. I am a "swinging voter".
I don't put great weight on needing a "businessman" to lead us when I look at overseas examples. We need an honest respected leader who can delegate as leaders do.
If I had any major criticism of this government it would be of immigration management. I have little faith in that department's integrity and transparency is lacking. Apart from that the management of covid-19 to date has been irrefutably superb. Running a country is complex, it will always remain that not everyone can be satisfied all the time.

Health and racism

David from Glen Eden

Great to see the health board are going to shrink their numbers, said to be from 20 to 8 or 12. Why not down to two, one for North Is, one for South Is.? And WHY WHY WHY is it going to take FIVE years??? And there's another issue. Our hottest topic bar covid-19 is racism. Makes a change from All Blacks eh. But here they are with the well overdue health reforms and we have a group of "officials?" wanting a separate set of rules for our Maori friends. Sorry, I don't see how divisive rules create a unified peaceful one nation practising equality.
And while I'm rabbiting on, what about reducing the dozens of power companies which all have overheads, overpaid CEOs, bless them! advertising, premises and expensive web sites. Electricity is one of those essentials that should not be privatised, like water too. It might do council good if Auckland runs out of water. Council might wake up and figure they really are overpaid for their failures.
Ah - that feels better. :-))

Building 101: So you want to build a sleep out...

Kylie Klein Nixon Reporter from Homed

When I heard there would be changes to the consent rules around building sleep outs, I was excited. I've always wanted a tea house in my back yard... a garden room where I can do a bit of potting, maybe read a book, or just cool off in the shade.

Turns out it's not quite as simple as a trip to the hardware store to burn a hole in your credit card. If you're thinking of putting something up on your property, check in here first:
